The awards will make possible the full restoration of this Grade B, listed
building which on completion will be the finest example in Scotland of a
traditional Salmon House including three ice chambers, net repairing floor
and accommodation bothy.
Built in 1834, the Bothy was in operation until
1990 and whilst kept sound until now, the restoration will ensure that the
building is brought back to first rate condition including complete
re-roofing, lime harling and full upgrading of the interior.
The project has been undertaken by the Scottish Traditional Boat Festival
and the funds secured thanks to the significant efforts of Robin Maddock,
Vice Chair of the Festival.
The Festival Committee have developed plans for
the use of the building including an exhibition about the salmon fishing
industry and Portsoy's social and industrial history. Plans also include the
creation of a centre for ancestral tourism and as a multi purpose community
resource for use by all age groups for heritage activities already developed
by the Festival including music, visual art and boat building.
Chairman of the Boat Festival Roger Goodyear said: "We are delighted to have
received the support of so many important funders for the creation of what
we believe will be an important new asset for Portsoy and indeed the region.
Work will be starting immediately with the opening ceremony to take place at
this year's Festival over the weekend of June 21st and 22nd."
