PRESS RELEASE 8th April 2009

The first gathering of Folk at the Salmon Bothy, Portsoy, was a resounding success, with a capacity audience of 60 lovers of live music, 23 of whom performed, either solo, or accompanying each other.

There was a good balance between songs and instrumental pieces, and musical styles. People came from Portsoy and as far as the Ellon area.

The guest M.C. for the evening was Keith Cockburn, convenor of Huntly Folk Club, well known to fans of the harbour-side sessions during Portsoy Boats Festival.

The “working party” has formed a Committee who have already set up a mid-month session for anyone wishing to rehearse or try out tunes with other musicians. This is to be Upstairs at the Salmon Bothy, from 7pm to 9pm, every first Wednesday monthly. The session is led by John F Sellar from Macduff Strathspey & Reel Society, who was involved in the setting up of the Salmon Bothy Museum.

Folk at the Salmon Bothy is held every third Friday monthly. Musicians and audience are asked to bring their own refreshments, and to turn up early, or risk being asked to wait until some people leave. Families are welcome.

Entry is by donation at the door. Tea and coffee are served during the social break at about 9pm. The next gathering is from 7pm to 11pm Friday 17th April. Visitors are asked to park at Links Road and walk up to the Bothy. For further details see www.salmonbothy.co.uk

PROPOSED FOLK CLUB AT PORTSOY SALMON BOTHY

Drama teacher Wendy de Rusett and other interested persons invite members of the public to join them at either or both of two meetings upstairs at the Portsoy Salmon Bothy. The aim of the meetings are to set up a once a month Folk Club at the Bothy, which would suit the needs of musicians and live music lovers in the wider area. The meetings are from 7pm – 8.30 on Friday 20th and Friday 27th February. If enough people are interested in attending and helping to run such a venture, it could start in March.

Wendy, who runs an informal agency called TASC – Traditional Arts for School & Community says “there is so much going on now in the live music field, but still room for a family friendly evening, once a month, which will get people together, some to entertain, some to gain confidence to take up an instrument or join a class, and some to find performers for a event they might be planning, especially in this year of Homecoming.

The first two Fridays of the month, and the first Thursday are taken up with live music evenings in Portessie, Portknockie and Banff, the last Thursday is for Gartly Tin Hut sessions. Many live music enthusiasts go to all four of these events, once a month. A third Friday of the month event at Portsoy would be accessible to those enthusiasts in addition to many people in the Portsoy area who do not wish to travel so far. If the club were popular no doubt other events and projects would spring from it, such as workshops classes, theme evenings or afternoons. The Bothy is already hosting classes in knitting, painting and a series of afternoon and evening talks. There is a very positive “buzz” about the place.

Anyone unable to go to the meetings, but willing to offer help or share their ideas may e-mail Wendy at tasc_wder@btinternet.com  before the meetings.
