The bothy programme for Boat Festival-2009
All weekend Upstairs will feature the North Sea Art Exhibition which is on loan from the Society of Scottish Artists. In 2008, Stavanger was European Capital of Culture and involved the North Sea Project: a celebration of the historical and contemporary links between the West Coast of Norway and the North East Coast of the UK. This generated the North Sea Residencies between August 2007 and January 2008 during which five Norwegian artists each enjoyed two-month residencies in Scotland, while six Scottish artists worked in Rogaland, using the Capital of Culture theme of ‘Open Port’. A selection of the work produced is on show and is an exciting demonstration of their responses to the host country. |

Living Tradition MarqueeCome to the living tradition marquee down by the Salmon Bothy and try for yourself some of the skills which our seafaring forbears have depended on for generations - we’ll have you “in knots” as you try net making, knot tying, weaving, spinning, knitting, felting, creel making and much more. Think you are good at knots? Come and try the “Great Fid Challenge” - Tying rope on to an inverted wooden cone (fid) hanging point down to take your weight. Sounds easy? It isn’t! Need help with a knitting problem, want to try your hand at Fair Isle knitting or learn about the skills involved in knitting a gansey? Come and talk to gansey enthusiast Paul Dodwell or drop into the knitting clinic, or even join one of the classes at the Institute Hall. Come and see the world’s fastest knitter, Shetland’s Hazel Tindall, and pick up some tips. Then try our “Portsoy’s Biggest Knitter” challenge - using giant needles, this is fun for all the family. The internationally acclaimed knitter, weaver and singer, Norman Kennedy, is making the Homecoming trip from the US to his native Aberdeenshire especially for this festival. As well as giving talks and demonstrating traditional techniques at the marquee, you can join Norman at the Institute Hall on Friday afternoon in "waulking" (finishing) a length of woven tweed with traditional songs. What's moreLast but not least, call on the folk from the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses, the RSPB and the Moray Firth Partnership, all of whom will be delighted to talk to you. |
